Enjoy your cake!Assessment
Students will vote on the best decorated cake. The winner will get a certificate.Class Experience
Students will be given several recipes for cake, frosting, and fruit filling (fruit filling is optional). They will choose their recipes and attempt to make a fully decorated cake in 1 hour and 45 minutes (minus the time at the beginning of class for introductions, etc.). While students are working, I will provide feedback, give suggestions and help, and ask them questions about what they are doing and what they expect to happen (much like being on a real TV baking show!) Suggested timeline: Choose recipes (can be done ahead of time) Gather ingredients (can be done ahead of time) Heat up the oven (must not be done until the host (teacher) says "Go!") Mix cake batter and bake it. While the cake is baking, make the filling (optional--but will need time to cool) Remove cake and let chill. (as soon as it is safe to handle, cut the cake into layers so that it can cool faster) While the cake is chilling, mix the frosting. Decorate the cake! The only limit is your imagination. As this is a "Cooking Show", students need to have their cameras on for this class so we can observe each other's creativity and cooking process. I can give feedback as I watch students work, and am unable to do this if their camera is off. Students will show off their cakes, and each student will vote for their favorite. The winner will get a certificate!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to work under pressure.
Students will bake a cake, and decorate it.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be using the oven and stove (if making a filling) for this class. Parental guidance is not required but may be necessary for those students who have not worked in the kitchen before.
Allergen alert:
Common ingredients for cake include: flour, sugar, eggs, butter/oil/margarine, milk, baking powder/soda, and cocoa.
A buttercream frosting is made from powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla. Students may add cocoa or chocolate for a chocolate frosting.
Fruit filling is made with fruit (usually berries), sugar, and a thickener (cornstarch or flour).
Other recipes may include other ingredients, including nut, soy, gluten, and dairy products. Contact me ahead of time for suggestions on substitutions if needed! I always do lactose-free baking, and substitutions do not usually affect the finished product.
Supply List
Students will be given several recipes one week prior to the start of class. They can choose one cake and one frosting recipe (and a filling recipe if desired), and will need to have the ingredients listed for the start of class. They may also want other supplies, such as food coloring, sprinkles, other decorations, or other ingredients to make their cake unique. Students will need access to an oven, cake pans, and basic kitchen tools, such as spoons, spatulas, measuring cups and spoons, and a mixer (handheld or counter top).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello all! I'm so excited to get to know you and see you in the classroom! I have 7 years of teaching experience and love to teach all ages and subjects. I have my M.Ed in teaching, and most of my teaching experience is in upper elementary and ESL education. Classes I offer include French, writing, life skills, Harry Potter, elementary science and math. If there is a class you're interested in that isn't scheduled, please shoot me a message so we can work something out!
Everything I do in the classroom stems from the belief that every child can learn. I also believe that my job as a teacher is first to keep my students safe (physically, emotionally, etc.), then to help them learn, then to help them have fun. I try to make my classes as fun as possible to keep students engaged because I really believe learning can be enjoyable!
