2 live meetings

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students should spend about 60-90 minutes a week outside of class practicing the words they've learned. (30 minutes a day, 2-3 times a week). Students can use the games and activities used in class for practice. It is not possible to learn a language only practicing twice a week, so I encourage students to review a bit every day!

Students will be given a letter grade based on their score for each test and exam (middle and end of course). A--90-100%, B--80-89%, C--70-79%, D--60-69%, F--0-59%. Students will also receive feedback on all work they submit, and will be given help with pronunciation.

Class Experience

This class is designed to teach students French through conversation, rather than learning lists of vocabulary words with no idea of how to put them together in a sentence! Each unit is divided into 4 lessons (2 weeks), starting with an introduction and finishing with a mini-exam. Units build on each other, so students get lots of exposure to previously learned grammar and vocabulary. This is not a writing course, so students do not need to worry about spelling words or accents. All assessments and activities (unless an oral exam) will include all French words and will have them match them to English, translate into English, or provide the question/answer for the sentence provided.

We will be using Quizlet, which requires students to log-in with a Google account. I encourage students to use this to practice outside of class. We will also be using Kahoot in class--it is recommended that students either use a second device or know how to do a split-screen. The question and answer options will be displayed through my shared screen on zoom, and students will input their answers on their screen.

As this is a conversational class, students will use the breakout rooms in Zoom to practice with each other. Most learners are more confident speaking when they are interacting with a peer rather than a teacher, and the breakout rooms provide this freedom for learners. Students will be regularly monitored in the breakout rooms, and provided a google doc of vocabulary and talking points to aid them.
