Class Experience

Does your child love to help in the kitchen? Then they will have fun in these one-on-one cooking and baking sessions. We will go through the steps of the recipe together as I demonstrate each skill and provide assistance. The exact skills to be covered vary based on the recipe, however mixing, measuring, and cutting are often practiced. I am very positive and encourage all young chefs to experiment with their ingredients when appropriate to the recipe and celebrate all of their hard work.

This class is ongoing and can be booked for as little as one session or as many sessions as you would prefer. Please contact me to set up a suitable day and time. We will also discuss recipe choices based on your preferences. Entrees, snacks, and desserts in savory and sweet flavors are available as choices as well as seasonal recipes. Examples of recipes include (but are not limited to) chocolate chocolate chip muffins, banana bread, nacho pizza, and lasagna cups. Seasonal and holiday-themed recipes are also available.

Some recipes may need to be frozen or baked outside of class time. Adult assistance may be required for our youngest chefs. Adult supervision is recommended for any recipe requiring the use of knives or the oven. Any chefs with dietary restrictions should check recipe ingredients as they may contain allergens including, but not limited to, nuts, wheat, and milk.

Hello! I'm Jessica McKenna. I have a love of learning and enjoy bringing that passion to the classroom. My goal is to inspire your child to be passionate about learning as well.

I have 20 years of teaching experience both in-person and online. My journey teaching on Outschool began in April 2020 and I have been lucky enough to work with learners from all but one continent. In addition to my years teaching on this platform, I have also worked with children ages 3-13 in a variety of in-person capacities, including as a teacher, as a curriculum specialist, and the director of an early education center. I have been the educator of adults as well as children and have had the opportunity to teach other professionals on a wide range of topics including Foundations of Early Education and Positive Guidance in the Classroom.

I have my Bachelor’s Degree in both Art History and English from Rutgers University and am certified to teach Kindergarten through 5th Grade. I am also trained in the Handwriting Without Tears approach to learning print and cursive penmanship and base my handwriting classes and tutoring around this program. Even with the ability to use technology to communicate, I believe that handwriting is an important, basic life skill that should not go unlearned. Cooking is another basic skill that is important, and it offers the opportunity to practice other subjects, most notably math, reading, and science.

My aforementioned love of learning lends itself to my being a life-long learner. I frequently participate in professional development and educational experiences, such as Integrated STEM and Working with Diverse Learners.

When I'm not in the virtual classroom or reading Jane Austen, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spoiling my cats.
