Class experience

Develop Basic Baking Skills: Participants will learn and practice fundamental baking skills, including measuring ingredients, mixing, following recipes, using kitchen tools and equipment, and baking techniques.

Enhance Knowledge of Baking Science: Students will understand the scientific principles behind baking, such as the role of different ingredients, the importance of precise measurements, and the chemical reactions that occur during baking.

Foster Creativity and Culinary Exploration: The class will encourage students to express their creativity by exploring various flavors, textures, and decorations in their baked goods. They will have the opportunity to experiment with different ingredients and customize recipes to suit their preferences.

Promote Kitchen Safety and Organization: Participants will learn essential kitchen safety practices, including proper handling of kitchen tools, safe oven use, and cleanliness. They will also develop organizational skills by following step-by-step instructions, managing time effectively, and maintaining a clean workspace.

Cultivate Independence and Problem-Solving Skills: Through hands-on baking activities and homework assignments, students will develop independence in the kitchen, learning to navigate challenges, troubleshoot issues, and adapt recipes when needed.

Foster a Love for Baking: The overall goal is to ignite a passion for baking and provide an enjoyable learning experience that inspires participants to continue exploring the world of baking beyond the class.

By incorporating these learning goals into the virtual baking class, participants will not only gain baking skills but also develop valuable life skills, creativity, and a love for the culinary arts.
Homework Offered
If needed, your child may need some time after class to finish baking. For example, a pie takes an hour to bake; while we will do all of the work and clean up within the class, the baking may extend past the end of class and need to be pulled out of the oven. When this is the case, I will be available via parent and student chat to answer any questions as baking concludes.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Due to the use of an oven in the virtual baking class, it is important to ensure that children have adult supervision and assistance throughout the baking process. Parents or guardians should be present to help preheat the oven, handle hot trays and dishes, and ensure safe oven use. Additionally, it is crucial to review oven safety guidelines with the participants, emphasizing the importance of not touching hot surfaces, using oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling hot items, and being cautious of steam and hot air when opening the oven door. Safety should always be the top priority, and parents or guardians should exercise judgment regarding the level of supervision required based on the child's age, maturity, and experience in the kitchen.

Additionally, due to the nature of this class, if a student misses a class, I will ask that they follow along on the class recording to make up for the missed class.

Ingredient Awareness: Before the class begins, parents or guardians should review the recipes and ingredient lists provided. Take note of any ingredients that may pose a risk to your student with known allergies or dietary restrictions.

Participant Disclosure: It is crucial for parents or guardians to inform me of any known allergies or dietary restrictions their child has. This information will help me provide appropriate guidance and offer alternatives or modifications when necessary.

Cross-Contamination Prevention: Participants with severe allergies should take precautions to avoid cross-contamination. This includes using separate utensils, bowls, and equipment for allergen-free options and thoroughly cleaning all surfaces and equipment before use.

Ingredient Substitutions: Where feasible and appropriate, alternative ingredients may be suggested for common allergens such as nuts, dairy, eggs, or gluten. However, participants or their parents/guardians should carefully assess and confirm the suitability of any substitutions based on their specific dietary needs.

Individual Responsibility: Participants and their parents or guardians are ultimately responsible for determining the safety and appropriateness of the recipes and ingredients for their specific dietary requirements and allergies.
