What's included
4 live meetings
2 in-class hoursHomework
2-4 hours per week. Students should be focused on the audition materials throughout the four week process. However, it might be best to practice in smaller sessions throughout the day rather than one long session. I want you to avoid burn-out as focusing on a small set of pieces like this can lead to burn-out if you are not careful.Assessment
Informal assessmentClass Experience
Students need to send me copies of pieces required for audition at least two weeks in advance so that I can have the materials beforehand. Materials that are included in an audition typically are one or more of the following: 1) scales, 2) chromatic scales, 3) etudes and 4) solos of varying length. Please include any metronome markings that are listed on the audition sheet. Week 1: The student will review the material with me and we will do an analysis of the pieces and scales. Students should practice the material in between lesson times. Week 2: I will provide the student with additional materials to help them with the audition materials. For example, Taffanel Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises (I will chose relevant exercises to help the student with their scales, 2) related etudes - etudes in the key of the piece or that specifically work on some part of the audition materials. Students should practice these materials in addition to the required pieces for the audition. Week 3: Students will review the audition pieces with me in a mock audition format. The first time around we will review the material slowly and the second time around we will decide on the tempo that will be used for the audition. If the student cannot comfortably play at the required tempo, they should aim to be as close as possible to that tempo. Week 4: We will again review the audition pieces at least twice and also review the scales and etudes that are assigned to assist with the audition pieces. Please note that I will need the audition materials at least two weeks in advance of the class so that I can adequately prepare for the class. This class is not a guarantee that the student will pass the audition. The best way of looking at an audition is that it gives you an opportunity to improve on specific skills and that if you pass the audition, that is "icing on the cake". Auditions are most successful when the student is prepared as possible and that is what this class aims to do.
Learning Goals
Students will prepare their audition materials to successfully complete their audition.
