1. Learners will develop a consistent embouchure and rounded flute tone with correct articulation.
2. Learners will be able to assemble the flute and hold it without tension.
3. Learners will be able to clean and care for their flute, extending the instrument's life.
4. Learners will be able to read a flute fingering chart and demonstrate the correct fingering on their flute.
5. Learners will be able to read notes on the treble clef staff.
6. Learners will be able to count and perform rhythms in simple meters.
7. Students will be able to identify major key signatures and time signatures.
I am a professional flute player and a licensed music teacher with over a decade of experience in public schools and as a private teacher. I have taught flute players of all levels and have experience teaching in group ensemble settings such as elementary bands, sectionals and flute ensembles.
Homework Offered
To reinforce learning, students are encouraged to practice the flute for at least 10 minutes daily. Additionally, they will receive occasional music theory assignments, which typically take around 5-10 minutes to complete.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners are not formally assessed but their progress is monitored through their participation, performance and improvement over time. Parents can expect to receive two formal progress reports on their child's progress during week 5 and week 9.
Grades Offered
To fully participate in this course, students will need the following materials:
-Quality student flute (please message me for guidance on obtaining an instrument!)
-Standard of Excellence Book 1 - Flute by Bruce Pearson
-Cleaning Rod (wooden or plastic)
-Interior Cleaning Swab (cotton or silk)
-Coffee Stirrer
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:

In our lessons, we will occasionally explore flute playing techniques that have been popularized by flute pedagogue Keith Underwood, including finger breaths and buzzing exercises. The employment of these techniques contribute to the enhancement of stability and tone quality in flute playing.
