In this eight week class, students will work through Bastien Primer Level (Piano, Theory and Performance) and learn the basics of piano playing.

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be assigned weekly homework primarily in the theory and performance books. The method book songs will be covered as fully as possible in the time given; the homework is optional for the most part but students are strongly encouraged to do it to help them learn the material fully.

Class Experience

Students will be using three books for this class - Primer Level method book, Theory book and Performance.  Most of the lesson will be in the method book but we will also uses exercises and songs from the theory and performance books.
Week 1 - a) sitting at the keyboard - p. 4; preliminary lessons - p. 5, 6, 7, 8; first songs - p. 8 -15; theory - p. 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8.  This will be covered briefly but mainly assigned as homework.  Performance - p. 2, 3, 4 and 6.  Selected pieces will be played and students can choose to work or one or more of them at home.
Week 2 - Review Lesson 1 and go over theory homework.  C position pieces in primer book - p. 16-25.  Theory lessons - p. 11 -16; mainly assigned as homework.  Students should always fill in out this section in pencil!  Performance - p. 8, 9, 10.  Students will hear all three pieces and choose one to work on at home.
Week 3 - Review selected pieces from Lesson 1 and 2.  Students will review theory homework as well.  New material - notation - p. 26-30; theory - p. 19.  Performance - p. 12.  Students will listen, clap the rhythm, say the letter names and work on this piece.  It will be part of homework for this week.
Week 4 - Students will review pieces learned so far; perform one for the class - review theory assignment.  New pieces - p. 31-38; theory - p. 21-27.  Performance - p. 13-19.  Students may choose to work on one of these pieces - this is optional work but encouraged so that students can progress faster.
Week 5 - Review lesson material and theory; The teacher will call on students to play one of the old pieces and see how well they do; theory assignment checked; New pieces - p. 39-44; theory - p. 28 to 32; performance; p. 20-24
Week 6 - Review - Can you play anything from memory?  Can you figure out out to play something without the music?  Theory review.  Middle C pieces - p. 44-52; theory - 32-36; performance - p. 24-28.  Recital time:  Students choose one performance piece to play for the class!
Week 7 - Review old pieces in random order; theory review; G position - p. 52-57; theory - p. 36 and 37; performance - p. 28/29
Week 8 - Recital time!  All students should be prepared to play one of their pieces (their best pieces) for the class.  Review the book and play pieces in random order; finish p. 57-64; finish theory p. 37-40; performance - . 30-32;  What have you learned in this class?  Share with the group.  Fill out the certificate at the end of the Primer Level book - share with everyone!
Learning Goals
Students will learn C position, Middle C position and G position on the piano.  They will learn pieces that will reinforce these positions.  They will learn how to sit at the piano and play with basic dynamics, intervals and basic symbols (like repeat sign, legato, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, treble and bass clefts and skip, step and repeat).
