Cooking & Baking with DeAnn: Pies and Homemade Crusts (Flex 14-18 yrs)
What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Our class has the best kind of homework! Make the pies and then enjoy them! :)Class Experience
** THIS IS A FLEX CLASS AND DOES NOT HAVE LIVE MEETINGS ** Students will learn how to make delicious homemade pies ... some of the most popular pies! Learners will also be taught to make their own pie crusts and talk about ways to add a personalized creative touch to their pies. Quick Class Schedule Overview: Week 1: Pumpkin Pie (Homemade Filling!) with a Homemade Single Pie Crust Week 2: Fresh Apple Pie with a Double Pie Crust or Lattice Pie Crust (both crusts taught in videos) Week 3: Strawberries 'N Cream Pie with a Graham Cracker Crust Week 4: Rich and Delicious Chocolate Silk Pie with a Single Baked Crust During the first and second classes, learners will be taught tips and tricks for making pie crusts. They will make single and double pie crusts and then fill them with homemade pumpkin pie and apple pie fillings, making two of the best pies! During the third class, students will learn to make a homemade graham cracker crust and fill it with a strawberries and cream pie. This is an incredible variation of a strawberry pie. In the fourth class, students will make a rich and delicious chocolate silk pie in a homemade or prepared pie crust - your choice. This pie takes more time and is more involved, so parental help is encouraged. Videos for each step of the pie-making process will be shown to help the learners easily follow along while making their pies and pie crusts. A list of supplies and ingredients will be sent out each week on Wednesdays (if your class starts on Saturday) or on Fridays (if your class starts on Monday) so you can plan and shop for any ingredients you might need. Photos of the ingredients and supplies will be included to help when shopping for ingredients. Recipes and instructional videos will be sent out early each Saturday/Monday morning (depending on the start day for your class) in preparation for the new week so you can make your pies at a time that works best for you. I will be available throughout the 4-week class for questions and comments and will do my best to respond quickly. Because this is a flex class, learners are encouraged to post weekly on the classroom page. I will ask questions about the pies, recipes, or pie-making process at the end of each week. Students should be prepared to share successes, as well things that might have been a struggle as they learned something new. Students will also be asked to share a photo with the class of at least 2 of their pies. My class is a safe place to learn, grow, make mistakes, laugh together, feel confident, and find new ways to be successful. I want everyone to feel safe and happy while creating in the kitchen. Come make pies with me!
Learning Goals
Students will:
• Learn to make homemade pie crusts and four different homemade pies.
• Share experiences with one another through the classroom.
• Build recipe files and increase confidence in cooking and baking.

Parental Guidance
Parents are strongly encouraged to assist the learner in the kitchen. Learners will be using the stove and/or the oven each week. Students will also be using a knife during different lessons to cut fruit and pie crust.
Please check ingredients for possible allergies and be aware that some of these recipes use nuts, gluten, chocolate and milk products. If you have an allergy concern, please message me regarding possible ingredients that may be a concern for your learner.
Parental supervision is encouraged.
Supply List
The supply lists and ingredients will change each week, depending on the pies and crusts we are making, and will be sent out 3 days before class so learners can plan and prepare for the upcoming week. As with all of my cooking and baking classes, I will include photos of the supplies and ingredients we will be using to make it easier for students to see and gather what they need for class. Most of the classes will require these supplies: Pastry Cutter/Blender 2 Medium-Large Mixing Bowls 9" Pie Dish (Other sizes are okay, but the filling we will make will typically fill a 9" pie dish. If you are using a larger pie dish, please let me know and I may be able to adjust the recipe for you.) Rubber spatula Wooden spoon Measuring spoons and cups Regular/butter knife Floured counter or board
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Weber State University
Cooking and baking are some of my favorite hobbies and I enjoy spending time making a variety of foods for my family. During the fall and winter seasons, I usually make 20-30 pies for friends and family. I have been cooking and baking for my family for over 25 years. However, my hobby truly began when I was a young girl and I wanted to make and create different foods and dishes in the kitchen. I am excited to share this wonderful hobby with young chefs and create an excitement in this as well.
