In this one-time, game-based class, we will review the sounds for the short vowels. Vowel sounds are so important in the English language, but hearing the differences among these vowels can be tricky for new readers and writers. Through games and interactive activities, we will practice listening to identify what letter is in a word and gain confidence writing these vowels. We will practice the appropriate mouth shape for each sound and play interactive games to identify which letters are missing. Games will include vowel identification races, "rolling" for words, and identifying missing letters. We will use dice, spinners, worksheets, and vowel cards to create a truly interactive experience! Note: Students will be most successful in this class if they are always or almost always correct in their consonant sounds. Some errors are okay, of course! Because the focus is on the vowel sound, it is ideal for other sounds to be mastered or nearly mastered.
Learning Goals
Students will practice the use of short vowels in CVC words and have the ability to listen for and identify the short vowel sounds.

Hello Outschool families! Young learners are full of so much curiosity, insight, and natural love of learning! But school can sometimes stifle this love of learning, and small frustrations can become bigger. I love finding fun and innovative ways to teach young learners new skills, and my number one passion is teaching learners to read! I use basic phonics to progress students from letters to words, and from words to sentences. Once learners have the right tools, they progress quickly. A love of books opens a lifetime of possibilities.
My instruction is built on a strong belief that the well-established and growing body of knowledge known as the "Science of Reading" establishes that children learn to read skillfully and efficiently when given explicit instruction and adequate practice with phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study.
I have completed the 30-hour "Morphology Plus" training in the Orton-Gillingham approach through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education as well as a course in grammar and writing through the same institute. I've also taken a 30-hour educator training through the Reed Charitable Foundation in Orton-Gillingham, making 60+ total hours of Orton-Gillingham training.
I have taught second grade and preschool, and served as a behavior specialist in a K-8 school. I also have a M.A. in Teaching and a second M.A. in Applied Ethics. I have three kids, ages 12, 10, and 6, and each one has needed different things to grow their love of books and reading. I can't wait to help you discover what lights up your learner! I live in Montana, so when I'm not in the classroom, I love spending time outside with my family!
