Note: This class is a follow up to "Sound it Out: From Letters to Words." Students who are confident with CVC words are welcome to start with this class. This is a high-energy, game-based class that will help students take the next step in their reading journey. Over the course of our 8 classes together, students will increase the number of words they can decode through adding common digraphs, blends, "magic e" words, and some long vowel sounds (vowel teams). Class will be responsive to students needs and experiences, but will follow this general format. Week 1 (classes 1 and 2): Quick review of CVC words, followed by the introduction of the common digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh. We will use these digraphs to increase the number of words we can easily decode. Week 2 (classes 3 and 4): We will introduce common consonant blends at both the beginning and end of words (bl, br, cl, dr, fr, fl, gr, pr, sl, sp, etc). (Depending on the group, this may also include 3-letter blends like str- and spr-) Week 3 (classes 5 and 6): Week 3 will introduce the long vowel sounds supported by "magic e." Week 4 (classes 7 and 8): Depending on class needs, this will include further practice with the above, and/or the introduction of vowel teams (ai, ee, ou) or r-controlled vowels (or, ar, ir, er, ur). Supplementary material will be provided at no extra cost each week to help students learn in class and at home. Alternatives will always be available if you do not have a printer. #academic
Learning Goals
Learners will build on their knowledge of letter-sounds, phonemic awareness, and blending/segmenting of sounds. Learners will add digraphs sh, ch, th, and wh, initial and final consonant blends, "magic e" words, and other phonics skills to improve reading.
