Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Unlock the world of reading in this dynamic, game-based class designed to help students transition from letter sounds to mastering basic words. Over the course of eight engaging sessions, we will develop essential skills necessary for reading CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words. Our journey will involve three key steps: HEARING sounds in words, MAKING the sounds in words to read them, and uncovering the building blocks of reading.

Course Highlights:

Week 1 (Classes 1 and 2): Start with a review of fundamental letter sounds and develop phonemic awareness skills—the foundation for strong decoding abilities.

Week 2 (Classes 3 and 4): Dive into blending consonant-vowel-consonant words. Practice both reading and constructing CVC words together.

Week 3 (Classes 5 and 6): Explore blend ladders and the "blend as you read" technique for improved fluency.

Week 4 (Classes 7 and 8): Tailored to class needs, this week may involve additional practice of previous skills or an introduction to basic blends (e.g., 'sk,' 'sm') and digraphs (e.g., 'ch,' 'sh').

Interactive Learning:

Throughout the course, we'll engage in interactive games and create phonics "sliders" to boost confidence and provide materials for practice. Our collaborative efforts will help bridge the gap from individual letters to full words.

Prerequisites:

While students will benefit most if they have some prior knowledge of letter sounds, these skills will continue to develop as we build words together.

Supplementary Materials:

Each week, students will receive complimentary supplementary materials to enhance their in-class and at-home learning experiences. A printer is helpful but not required.

Join us in this exciting journey as we equip students with the skills they need to read CVC words and beyond!

Learning Goals

Learners will build on previous letter-sound knowledge to begin blending, segmenting, reading, and writing CVC words (dog, cat, sun). Learners will learn about stop and continuous contents, have a strong focus on short vowel sound, and be provided with plenty of practice through the use of games and activities.
