US Grade 3 - 4
In this class, readers at a late 1st to early 3rd grade reading level will learn how to study words closely. In each class, we will examine at least one prefix or suffix. We will apply these prefixes and/or suffixes to common base words, define, and explore the meaning of the new words we create. We will examine parts of speech as they relate to these new words. In addition, we will examine related spelling rules and practice writing the new words while applying spelling rules. Week of September 9: Suffix -s, -es Week of September 16: Suffix -ing Week of September 23: Suffix -ed Week of September 30: Prefixes un-, dis- Week of October 7: Prefix re-, mis- Week of October 14: Suffix -er Week of October 21: Suffix -est Week of October 28: Suffixes -able/-ible Week of November 4: Suffixes -ful/-less Week of November 11: Prefix in/il/im/ir When mixing prefixes and suffixes that are not specifically the focus of the day’s lesson, any appropriate information will be included for spelling and making meaning.
