Is your neurodiverse mind a mystery to you? How does your unique brain work? Together, students will learn about different parts of the brain, how the brain controls thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how to unlock the mystery of executive functioning, metacognition, and self-regulation using mindfulness tools. Each week, students will begin with an emotions icebreaker, and then will learn about how the brain functions and various strategies for self-regulation based on neuroscience...
Students will learn basic brain anatomy including where the limbic system, amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex are located; the brain's role in directing throughts, emotions and behaviors; and self-regulation and mindfulness tools including mindful breathing and gratitude that activate the prefrontal cortex and promote self-regulation and impulse control.
Hello learners and parents! My name is Christy, and I teach classes that help children unlock the mystery of their mind and promote overall stress management, emotional regulation, and impulse control. I have 17 years of experience using research-based strategies to teach students how their brains work and how to cultivate more calm in their brains and bodies. My academic background is in School Psychology. I have a Masters in Education (MSE) and Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in the field of School Psychology with over 20 years of experience working with youth. I was certified in 2021 as a Growing Up Mindful (GUM) practitioner. I have worked in the private practice setting since 2016, teaching mindfulness, self-regulation, self-empowerment, and emotional awareness in both the small group and individual setting. As a psychometrist, I have extensive experience administering comprehesive psychoeducational evaluations, including asessments of intellectual functioning, executive functioning, and impulse control and self-regulation. I have worked with individuals ages 4 to adult as well as a wide range of diagnoses, including ADHD, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, physical disabilities, and behavior disorders.
Materials for each class will be provided in the Outschool classroom, but when needed, your child can also use a writing utensil and blank paper for class exercises. In addition to the provided handouts, the following materials are recommended for reach class: -Blank Paper -Writing Utensil -Crayons or Colored Pencils (optional) -Glue Stick -Scissors
I encourage parents to ask your child about what s/he learned so that the self-regulation skills can be practiced by the whole family. Because this is an informational and skill-building class, it is not a substitute for individual, group, or family counseling. No therapy will be provided. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like further guidance with the material.
