Beginner - Advanced Level
Does your learner have a reading requirement for a specific novel? Are you wanting to make sure that your learner has the support that they need to read a "classic" novel? In this ongoing class, we meet one on one to discuss a book chosen by your learner (or assigned). Together we will set a schedule of the number of pages and purpose for reading between classes. This class allows you to choose the pace that best fits your learner. We can meet once a week or more. We can also check in every two weeks, based on your summer schedule. Learners will use reading strategies to make connections as they read (text to self, text to world, and text to text), comprehension, perspective, character and plot development, and the skill of summarizing content. I have experience teaching many of the novels that appear on "reading lists" for both elementary and middle school age learners. This class is ongoing which means that meetings can be scheduled to fit your schedule this summer. 1 class? Learners may join one class to review a book that they have read or for help with a project. 2 weeks or classes? Fast readers may want to schedule two classes to discuss the background of a book, the characters, and the plot, followed by a second class to summarize and sequence the story or work on an essay or project. 3 weeks or classes? Perfect for readers who need more support as they read through a new novel.
Learning Goals
Read the learner's selected or assigned book for comprehension.
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

I have training in working with students with ADHD and dyslexia in supporting their reading.
Parental Guidance
I will occassionally use Nearpod to create quizzes for students based on their novel. Quizzes may be about the characters, plot, vocabulary, and literary devices.
Pre-Requisites
Please let me know in advance the novel you would like to study.
Supply List
Each learner chooses a novel that we will read and discuss. I can provide suggested books based on the learner's reading level and interests. Optional: notebook and/or handouts
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
