Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 7
Beginner Level
This one-to-one, on-going class is designed to help learners become better readers, where they not only read fluently but also have a good understanding of what they read. I use various age appropriate passages to teach research-based strategies such as identifying the main idea, identifying supporting details, using text evidence, context clues, text features, sequencing, summarizing and predicting. Using the student's background knowledge, we try to make sense of what they read and I also ask questions so they can make personal or world connections to what they read. I also ask comprehension questions throughout class to ensure the student is understanding the text and always encourage students to ask questions or ask for clarification if something is unclear. Because I am a native Spanish speaker, I am also able to offer this class to students learning to read Spanish General format: - Brief introduction, how was your week, anything you'd like to share? - Overview of the passage for the lesson: we will look at text features such as title, sub-title, pictures etc. and use them before reading to talk about what the passage might be about. Use student's prior knowledge to make connections with the reading. -Preview vocabulary -Use student's prior knowledge to make connections to the passage - Next, I will ask the learner to read the passage aloud so I can gauge their fluency. - The learner will answer comprehension questions and support their answer using text evidence. - We will discuss the passage in greater detail: identify main idea, supporting details, author's purpose etc.
