Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This is a 6-week reading comprehension course and will have the added benefit of being one-on-one. We we will practice a skill to improve your child's understanding of what they read each session. Your learner will be practicing the skills of reading comprehension by reading a variety of short stories from around the world and many different topics of interest. The schedule for the course will be as follows:

Week 1:
-a native American myth titled "Coyote and the River," where they will study cause and effect
-a historical biography titled "The Pharaoh Queen," where we answer comprehension questions

Week 2:
-a rhyming poem titled "How the Little Kite Learned to Fly," where we will discuss different poetry elements and answer comprehension questions
-an African folktale titled "The Honeybird," where we will answer comprehension questions and identify the moral of the story

Week 3:
-a biography on Thomas Alva Edison where we will discuss and answer comprehension questions while forming opinions
-a pancake recipe where will will practice identifying and finding important information in the text. They can make it at home afterwards, too. Yum!

Week 4:
-a Greek myth titled "Baucis and Philemon," where we will answer analytical comprehension questions about the characters.
-an Aesop fable titled "A Farmer, His Son, and Their Donkey," where we will put pictures in the correct sequence and write a sentence describing the event.

Week 5:
-a Medieval tale titled "The Sword in the Stone," where we will identify what was important about the story through comprehension questions.
-a fairy tale titled "The Emperor's New Clothes," where we will answer comprehension questions that the lessons learned.

Week 6:

There is no need to have these texts as I will share each reading material on the screen. At the end of each day's lesson, I will also have your child choose a topic they are interested in reading to further their reading skill taught that day and ensure they have the opportunity of choice in their reading.

I’m a certified teacher in Elementary Education with my Master’s in Education Leadership, with experience in both in the US and internationally. My family and I had the privilege of living overseas for 15 years, teaching in international schools around the globe. I've lived in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Bosnia and Herzegovina! I value teaching small groups, students from diverse backgrounds, instilling curiosity in my students, and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. Over the course of my 18 years in the classroom, I have gained valuable insight into best practices and ways to connect with learners. I strive for each of my learners to know that I care deeply about them and their education. Connection is the base for all authentic learning.

On Outschool, I am teaching an array of different classes: math camps, problem solving, traveling, book clubs, nature journaling, tutoring, choose-your-own-adventure, reading comprehension courses, and novel studies to list a few. I believe in smaller class sizes to ensure quality of education and engagement.

Outside of teaching, I am an avid long-distance trail runner, reader, and traveler! I'm equally passionate about all three. I love anything outdoors. Travel has taught me valuable life-long lessons that I love sharing with others. I have a teacher husband (also on Outschool!), and two young children that I adore.
