In this course student learn to extract key ideas from a story and then organize that information into paragraphs that can become summaries, variations, book reports or critiques. Goals for Unit 3 are as follows: Identify the story sequence in a narrative story. Make outlines based on the Story Sequence Chart. Summarize stories from outlines and internalize the components of a well constructed story. Know that each paragraph has a purpose. The teaching procedure is as follows: Read & Discuss: We will read a story together and discuss it in terms of the Story Sequence Chart. Create a Key Word Outline: Create a three-paragraph key word outline, noting that each paragraph has a purpose. Brainstorm: Students will brainstorm alternative ways to describe the characters, possible personalities, and way to express their ideas in writing, suggesting synonyms for various nouns and verbs in the story. Write: Rewrite the story in three paragraphs from the outline based on the Story Sequence Chart. Students will submit the assignment for teacher comments and suggestions.
