Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Bring your favorite stuffed animal and some paper to class! We will be creating short stories that star our very own stuffed animals.

In this one-time class, we will use stuffed animals as inspiration for story characters and will begin to put our story ideas down on paper.

Class starts with introductions to our stuffed animals and I'll ask open-ended questions to help get learners thinking of their stuffed animals as story characters. I will share one of my stuffed animals and the start of a short story starring my stuffy. We will
draw our main character (our stuffed animal) and brainstorm story ideas. Then learners will work on putting the very beginning of their story down on paper. As learners work on their stories, I will check in and provide support as needed. Learners are welcome to draw and/or write out their stories. My story example includes both drawing and writing.

The goal is not to complete a finished product by the end of the class, but for learners to get started on this process together, and to ignite an interest in connecting play with the beginning stages of creative writing. When children naturally bring their literacy development into their play, they can grow into more confident readers and writers over time.

This class is designed for children with a range of literacy skills. The way each child engages with the activities in this class will depend on their stage of literacy development (they may be drawing, writing words, and/or sentences). If your child is slightly outside of the age range, but you believe they would benefit from this class, feel free to reach out to me to see if it is a match. I strive to provide an inclusive learning environment and celebrate all levels of literacy development.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Portland State University
I have a Master's degree in early childhood and inclusive education with an emphasis on literacy. My love for creative writing started when I was a child and continues today. I have been an educator for 20 years and am passionate about teaching literacy skills that support a lifelong love of reading and writing. Storytelling and creative writing are some of my favorite ways to support literacy development. I see all children as capable individuals who are motivated to learn when their interests are honored and they are encouraged to make their own discoveries.
