Did you know that all stories include a similar sequence? We will be using common story elements to retell a story in our own words....and make it better! Students will be introduced to the third unit of writing methods from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), focusing on retelling narrative stories. Each class will consist of modeling and participation to produce outlines as we use questioning strategies to retell a story in an organized and logical format. We will transition our notes into 3 short paragraphs for a final product each week. New stylistic techniques are learned each week, and we will be using assignments done at home to share and discuss our work. The last portion of each class will consist of a short review game using a new element learned in class. Throughout this class, students will retell tall tales, myths, fairy tales, and their own choice of a book or movie, either as a personal retelling or students may use the story of focus as a plot-base for their own imaginative creations. Students should be able to read and write fluently. ALL students entering the class should have prior experience using Key Word Outlines and retelling paragraphs using IEW curriculum. This class is kept small so we can work together collaboratively and is is a great follow-up class to the "Writing from Key Word Outlines Using IEW Methods" class.

Parental Guidance
There are times for homework when students will be required to retell their outline verbally to an adult. I'd love for your support in lending them an ear for this assignment! Please contact me with any questions as we go through this process.
*Note: This curriculum, along with all curriculum I teach on Outschool is secular.
Supply List
I will provide homework posted in the classroom in pdf format after each class. Because this class does not have any supplemental materials to purchase, I will provide all resources necessary for homework. Students, however, may also use a resource of their choosing if they have something they would like to use that follows the assignment instead. As a Registered Instructor for IEW, I have been trained in the instruction of the units presented in the Teaching with Style and Structure Manual.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Meet the teacher
Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Teaching Certificates
Idaho Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Chapman University
I am an IEW Registered Instructor and have taught several IEW-related courses on Outschool since 2018 with previous experience teaching IEW in person. I find that students are challenged, engaged, and learn to enjoy playing with their writing.
