US Grade 5 - 8
Do you like tales that send a chill up your spine? Then this is the perfect class for you! In this ongoing class students will meet every week to write a scary story. Each week will involve a different sub-genre, for example one week we may be looking at writing a haunted house story whilst another could be about monsters. Students will be given information on the weeks sub-genre and also given several choices of writing prompts to help them begin their own story. After discussing the sub-genre students will be given five minutes for each act of their story. After each act we'll reconvene, share what we have so far and give feedback. By the end of the class each student will have a finished story that they can tell you! Between classes I'll share successful short scary stories with the class. This is to give them ideas for their own writing and also to emphasise how a good story can be very short and is writable within the class time. My teaching style is very interactive! I like to keep my class size relatively small so that students are given ample time to share their work, whilst this is a writing class building confidence in reading aloud is a secondary goal. I don't force students to talk but it's definitely encouraged. There is no previous knowledge required for this class. I will guide students every step of the way and give them clear goals on what to write. Just bring your passion! The Sub-Genre for the week will be announced in the class section before lesson for students that wish to prepare for it. I look forward to hearing your tales of woe!
