What's included

5 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Assignments
1 hour per week. PDF assignments will be given for each unit to allow learners to practice.
Grading
I will offer written feedback and editing of submitted assignments. I do not offer letter or number grades. In order for the assignments to be evaluated, they must be either typed or very neatly handwritten. The files should be uploaded in a direct Outschool message to me rather than posted on the main classroom page. Photos of handwritten work may be submitted provided the photos are oriented in the correct direction, taken from directly above, and fill the frame of the picture. If I cannot read it, I will ask for a different file to be uploaded. All submitted assignments must be double-spaced.

Class Experience

This overview class will briefly cover IEW units 1-4 with A-level examples including key word outlines, paragraph writing, retelling stories, and writing an informative paragraph. The class will include instruction, group practice, and individual writing. PDF handouts will be provided with assignments to solidify each unit. Feedback will be provided for each assignment that is submitted to me via Outschool message.

The first class will cover unit one.
Unit 1: Key word outlines will be taught using a level A source text.

The second class will cover unit two.
Unit 2: Building on the creation of the key word outline (KWO), beyond speaking from the outline, learners will write a paraphrase from their outlines.

The third class will cover unit three.
Unit 3: The story sequence chart is introduced to plan a retelling of a simple fable. KWOs will be created from the fable by answering questions about the story.

The fourth class will finish unit three and begin unit four.
Unit 3: Learners will complete their retelling of the fable according to the story sequence chart.
Unit 4: Our new structure will be an informative paragraph as we find facts in a source to use in our KWO.

The last class will finish unit four and review style.
Unit 4: Learners will complete their informative paragraphs with topic/clincher sentences.

Style ideas will be presented in the classroom following class and include an opportunity for learners to share their ideas.
Learning Goals
Learners will be introduced to units one through four of the IEW method.
