Is your child struggling with reading comprehension? In this class, students will practice reading comprehension skills such as using previewing text, using context clues, gaining background, knowledge, summarizing and finding evidence within text. They will require these skills while reading a chapter book. Day 1: Students will learn about previewing texts and any background knowledge they need on the subject. Day 2: Students will learn different types of context clues in order to gain better understanding of vocabulary. Day 3: Students will learn about suffixes, prefixes and root words in order to enhance their vocabulary. Day 4: Students will learn how to write notes as they read in order to retain what they are reading and answer comprehension questions. Day 5: Students will be guided in how to write an essay step-by-step. Day 6: Students will apply these skills to a short text.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to use various strategies in order to better understand text that they read.

Parental Guidance
Students will watch a YouTube video about Zeus and read the book Little Olympians: Zeus, God of Thunder. It may be helpful to buy or borrow a physical copy of the book for this class, but it is not necessary as the book will be screen shared.
