US Grade 2 - 4
Plot

Purpose: Students will become familiar with plot structure and the idea that every story has a problem and a solution.

Students will look more in depth at previous books that have been read and use Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diseen to look at the different parts of a story such as: Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Resolution.

Students will brainstorm problems that their character could have.
Homework: Students will create a rough draft.

Setting:

Purpose: Students will identify setting in a story (both time and place); Students will brainstorm ideas for a setting for their story

Activities: The class will listen to parts of the stories:

Thunder Cake by Patricia Polocco

Students will brainstorm different types of settings.
They will then choose a setting and then draw a picture from the setting.

Character:

Purpose: Students will be able to identify personality traits in a character.
They will also consider the setting as review.

Activities:
Pigs by Robert Munsch
Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diseen

Students will look at the characters in books and describe their personalities and appearance.
Brainstorm different aspects of a character; What will they look like? What will their personality be like? Then they will invent a character for their story and if there is time draw a picture.
