Summer Camp: Creative Writing Middle School

In this two-week course, students will be working on writing an original story while developing reading and writing skills.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Students will start each class with a lesson on different elements of a story. Then students will be given about 15 to 20 minutes to write. In this class students will learn.

Class 1: The Writing Process
Students will learn about the steps of the writing process and begin brainstorming for their story

Class 2: Plot Structure
Students will learn about plot and conflict

Class 3: Character
Students will learn how to develop character and create backstories

Class 4: Setting
Students will consider setting and learn tips for describing setting.

Class 5: Dialogue
Students will learn how to use dialogue to enhance a story and how to write it. 

Class 6:  Revising
Students will learn how to revise their story and begin to read over their own story to see where it needs to revise.

Class 7: Editing
Students will learn how to edit their own writing and make edits to their writing.

Class 8: Critiques
Students will share their work with classmates and practice giving and receiving feedback.  (Depending on class size this may take two days)

Class 9:  Update
Students will spend the class updating their writing


Class 10: Submission  
Students will spend the class updating their writing in order to submit it by the end of class.
