Description

Class Experience

Learners will learn to use knives, the oven, the stovetop, a toaster oven if preferred, pots and pans with liquids, and cooking utensils such as a spatula, spoon and ladle.
Mrs. B has been a teacher for almost 20 years. She has taught high school learners for 10 years and is passionate to include diverse learners in her classes. As a special education teacher, she has worked with many neurodiverse students and those with physical differences. As a mom of an autistic tween, she is particularly interested in helping students develop important, independent life skills such as advocacy, cooking, managing household tasks and navigating school and the world in general. Mrs. B grew up in a family of chefs and helped with her parents' catering business for many years. She continues to cook for her family, friends and coworkers and loves to pass on her knowledge to others.
Students will need to take their food out of the oven or off of the stovetop after class once the item has finished cooking.
Knife set (with chopping knives for vegetables)
Pasta pot
Regular pot
2 different sized pans (one that would be big enough to cook 1-2 eggs and another that may be big enough to cook 3-5 eggs)
13x9 or similarly sized casserole dish
ladle

An ingredient list will be provided prior to class. This will be posted in the classroom. Recipes will be posted in the classroom the day before each class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will complete three meals to share with their families.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
As with any cooking class, students will be using knives, hot materials, the oven and stove. Parental guidance or supervision is highly encouraged to ensure the safety of all learners in this class. Depending on student's level of independence and familiarity with the kitchen, families may help learners with steps to ensure safety (pour boiling water into sink).
