Class Experience

This is a fun, introductory 3-session course aimed at students who want to begin to investigate how to capture great movie footage and sound at home using tablets, phones and digital devices.

Each session will start with a warmup activity and includes opportunities for hands on activities. Participation is not essential but warmly encouraged.

> Session 1: This session will encourage students to examine different film genres and to consider the different job roles available within the film industry. We will investigate how footage can be captured using different types of camera shots and angles. The session will close with an onscreen quiz and prop challenge.

> Session 2: This session focuses on the role of storyboarding in film design and students will be given the opportunity to storyboard a short sequence. The role of music will be examined, and students will listen to and select appropriate music clips for different film settings. Students will be introduced to some of the hardware and equipment used to record sound in the studio and on location.

> Session 3: This session explores the use of Foley sound effects and other audio post-production techniques. Students will participate in a Foley scavenger hunt and a short sound quiz. Students will examine the role of Copyright in selecting resources.

Parental Guidance
If a student wishes to capture footage to share in the classroom, parents and guardians should ensure the safety of their children during filming. Films submitted to the classroom should not include personal information, such as full names and location of any student. Students should ensure that only appropriate clothing is worn, and that footage does not contain any material that could be considered inappropriate, offensive or dangerous. Any footage submitted to the classroom will only be shared with other learners within the group with the permission of the parent/guardian. Footage of other students must not be shown outside the Outschool classroom. You are advised to supervise your children if they are using online services to research and source sounds and images. The website www.zapsplat.com is great for accessing a range of sounds and parents are advised to create a free account if they wish to support their child in selecting appropriate sounds. No payment details are required for the free sound downloads. (Alternative sound effect libraries are available at https://sound-effects.bbcrewind.co.uk/search). There are many useful resources which offer guidance on how to keep your children safe online, such as https://www.childnet.com/parents-and-carers/parent-and-carer-toolkit
Supply List
Worksheets to support the classes will be posted in the classroom 24 hours before the start of the session. Students should bring paper, pens and coloring materials to class.
