Class Experience

Please note: This class is designed to be taught via PC or MAC interface. A separate class is available for iPad users.
----------------------------------------------
In this 5-session, small-group tech class, learners will explore and work with the main drawing tools in Adobe Illustrator, to create their own vector-based digital artwork. Learners will be guided through some of the main tools and features of the Adobe Illustrator™ to help master the core skills needed to create dynamic and exciting digital graphics.

Adobe Illustrator™ is a powerful graphic design software package suitable for PC and Mac. The software allows users to design and build precise vector-based graphics and illustrations, suitable for screen and print. Professional designers use the app to create websites, corporate branding, icons, user interfaces and concept art. With a little bit of guidance, learners can design great art too!

This class is best suited to learners who have some experience working with digital drawing software, such as Procreate™, Ibis Paint™ or Affinity Designer™. Learners can build on existing skills to take their illustrations to the next level. Please note: As this class is designed for 1-2 learners, the content can be adapted to suit individual learning needs.

Each class will focus on a new skill, building on previous content. Learners will be challenged to create artwork of their own.

Lesson 1:
✳️Familiarization with the workspace, basic tools panels and menus.
✳️Using layers
✳️Saving files

Lesson 2:
✳️Creating and editing shapes,
✳️Using the drawing tools, (pen, pencil and curvature tools)
✳️Tracing objects

Lesson 3:
✳️Transforming and grouping shapes
✳️Color and stroke properties

Additional hardware requirements:
You may find it easier to manipulate lines and shapes if you have access to a graphics tablet with pen or stylus, (there are many inexpensive drawing tablets available such as the WACOM™ tablet). If you prefer to use a graphics tablet you will need to ensure that it is compatible with Adobe Illustrator™ and that it is installed before the start of class.

Learning Goals

Learners will be able to use the main Adobe Illustrator™ tools to create their own vector-based digital illustrations ready for export. Learners will be given guidance on how develop their designs further outside of the classroom.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class requires learners to have the desktop version of Adobe Illustrator™ installed on their PC or MAC. Parents will need to create an account and download the software. Parents may like to download the trial version to see if the package is suitable before considering a subscription - a 7 day free trial is available at https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/illustrator/free-trial-download.html Eligible learners can purchase the Adobe Creative Cloud packages at a discounted cost. Parents can find details at https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/buy/students.html Adobe Illustrator™ is a complex but exciting drawing package – learners will need to have realistic expectations about their level of achievement in each session. They are welcome to use the classroom messaging system for further guidance if needed after the class. Learners will need access to different device or screen to the one they are working on so that they can watch the teacher demonstration.
