Class Experience

This class will introduce the learner to the micro:bit online classroom environment. This is an online learning space which enables me to demonstrate how to code the BBC micro:bit™ and to support the learner as they code. Student and teacher progress can be seen in real-time, and shared, where applicable, to the whole class. I will support you with your coding and offer guidance as we work through the lesson.

The class will begin by exploring the hardware of a physical BBC micro:bit™ device and you should become comfortable naming and explaining the main components of the device.

We will then use the MakeCode Editor™ to program an Emotion Simulator. You will be guided to code the onscreen emulator to output different light patterns to represent whether you are feeling happy, sad or even just a bit meh! You will also program a simple digital output to help you regulate your breathing to help you stay calm and relaxed!

Towards the end of the lesson, you should feel confident enough to begin to adapt your code to add additional functionality to your project. If you have a physical version of the micro:bit™ you will be shown how to download (flash) the code to your device.

This class is suitable for beginners with little or no programming experience. This class is best experienced by accessing 2 devices; one device to watch the demonstration and a second device to code on.

If you want to try more exciting STEM projects you can purchase a physical micro:bit device from a variety of online stores, including Amazon, for example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BBC-BBC2546862-micro-bit-go/dp/B01G8X7VM2/ref=sr_1_3?crid=22IK4Y1H78S0Y&keywords=microbit&qid=1649782127&s=computers&sprefix=microbit+%2Ccomputers%2C39&sr=1-3

Although this is a taught, paid course, the BBC micro:bit MakeCode™ editor is freely available to use and can be accessed at https://microbit.org/
Learning Goals
Learners will become familiar with the MakeCode™ Programming Environment and the hardware associated with the BBC micro:bit™.

Learners will be encouraged to write short programs demonstrating simple programming concepts, such as sequencing, repetition, variables, and events.

Parental Guidance
This class is best experienced by accessing 2 devices; one device to watch the demonstration on and a second device to code on. The student will need to be logged into the Outschool classroom on both devices. If you cannot access 2 devices, the student will need to toggle between the teacher demonstration and the code window. It is advisable to check whether your child will need support with this. This class uses the BBC micro:bit™ classroom coding environment - you can find more details at: https://microbit.org/
Supply List
This class does not require the learner to have a physical micro:bit™ device. However, if you have access to a physical BBC micro:bit™, you will require a USB cable to connect it to your computer. A second device or screen to code on is beneficial.
