Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
In this ongoing/weekly reading class, students will engage in a variety of activities designed to enhance their reading skills and comprehension abilities. The class will focus on several key areas:

Reading Extracts and Comprehension Questions: Students will read extracts from age appropriate popular tween and YA novels. They will then answer a series of comprehension questions to ensure they understand the content and can recall important details.

Analyzing Writer's Techniques: Students will learn how writers create effects through their use of language. This includes examining how characters are developed and how figurative language (such as metaphors, similes, and personification) is used to enhance the narrative.

Characterization: Students will explore how characters are portrayed in the text. They will look at the actions, dialogue, and descriptions provided by the author to understand the characters' personalities, motivations, and relationships.

Language Analysis: Students will delve into the specific language choices made by the author. They will analyze how word choice, sentence structure, and literary devices contribute to the overall meaning and tone of the text.

Writing P.E.E. Paragraphs: Students will practice writing P.E.E. (Point, Evidence, Explanation) paragraphs. This involves making a point about the text, providing evidence from the text to support their point, and explaining how the evidence supports their point. This structured approach helps students articulate their thoughts clearly and logically.

Improving Reading Age/Ability: By engaging in these activities, students will improve their reading age and ability. They will develop critical thinking skills, enhance their vocabulary, and become more adept at interpreting and analyzing texts. This will not only help them in their current studies but also prepare them for more advanced reading and writing tasks in the future.

Overall, the class aims to build a strong foundation in reading comprehension and analysis, equipping students with the skills they need to succeed academically and beyond.

Students are given verbal feedback during the class and exemplar answers are shared with the class to help students understand how well they have done or how they can improve on their written answers.
PLEASE NOTE- the Saturday section only runs every other week, not every week.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their reading, comprehension and analytical skills.
