Progress monitoring will include these four areas: word identification, passage comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.

Class Experience

Students will learn several strategies to strengthen their reading comprehension skills in this class. They will learn what good readers do before, while, and after they read. They will also gain metacognitive skills which help them think about their thinking. We will begin with listening comprehension and transitional metacognition, then move to guided metacognition. 

1. Students will learn to retell a story using picture cues.
2. Students will learn to summarize a narrative passage with three sentences.
3. Students will learn to summarize a narrative passage using the 5 W questions.
4. Students will learn to summarize an expository passage using a card pyramid.
5. Students will read with attention to punctuation, phrasing, and expression.

I use the "I do", "We do", and "You do" approach in order to facilitate student learning. Lessons can be modified to meet individual learner needs.

Students will use their strategies to gain a better understanding of the text.

This class is designed to meet the needs of special education students.
Supply List
The learner will need a folder, the ability to print weekly passages, a few highlighters, and index cards.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
