US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate Level
This ongoing class is ideal for students who need to improve or master their reading comprehension skills. The high interest comprehensions (covering a wide variety of topics such as - history, geography, the natural world, current affairs, biographies and science topics) challenge students to develop the core reading skills: retrieval, vocabulary, summary, inference, compare and contrast, prediction and author choice. The text are purpose written using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease to ensure the texts are reading age appropriate. Students will be challenged with 1, 2 or 3 mark questions so they learn to understand what the question is asking them to do and how to write detailed, extended answers and use evidence to support their answers. Lessons start by reading the comprehension and checking understanding - then, using chat, students answer a series of 1, 2 and 3 mark questions (exemplars are then shared with the class). Students then work independently answering the questions on the worksheet which is submitted after lesson for marking and feedback.
