Weekly Reading Comprehension: Read All About It

This ongoing course is designed to engage young learners in the world around them using newspaper style articles.  The articles are purpose written for the age group and contain safe, balanced age-appropriate coverage of international news stories. Topics will be as varied as the news; ensuring learners engage with a wide range of subjects and gain confidence in discussing age appropriate issues and expressing their opinions based on unbiased factual evidence. Articles on science, history, geography, sport, current affairs and even entertainment ensure that students will read a varied and stimulating article every week. 
Lessons will follow the same format. We will read the article and then answer a series of  targeted questions - comprehension, vocabulary, retrieval, inference, prediction, and summary to teach and develop core reading skills. We also play two games - word scramble to help develop learners ability to quickly skim and scan a text and True or False - a general knowledge quiz with questions linked to the subject matter of the article. 
After class ends there is an optional worksheet containing questions based on the article that students can complete and send for marking and feedback.
