Class Experience

Spoken Word Poetry is part of an oral tradition found throughout the world, from storytelling to Slam Poetry Competitions. Students will learn basic tips on writing for the stage and performing their original poetry. We will cover topics such as editing original work, pacing, word choice, stage presence, vocal inflection and articulation, managing stage fright, and getting ready for a performance.
The first week will target the writing/editing process, the second week will focus on performance aspects. Students will have the option to submit work for edits between weeks 1 & 2.
The class is part slides/lecture to go over concepts and look at examples, but quickly opens to discussion of students work and practicing. Week 2, students will have the opportunity to perform an original poem and gain feedback & encouragement from myself and the class. I strive to create an environment that is safe and supportive to all learners, and where all can be heard and inspired. Students should have basic reading/writing skills and a passion for expressing themselves through poetry! New writers are welcome to join and try it out as well! Feel free to reach out with any questions!
