Each class will begin with a creative writing exercise. We will then move into an interactive lesson using a combination of slides, class discussion, and exercises. Students will have ample opportunity to ask questions, interact with each other, and share their original work. Below is an overview of the course flow. My teaching style for this course is structured around specific content, yet student paced, so some weeks may vary from the description depending on student needs. Students do not need any prior knowledge of poetry, but should be at or above a 3rd grade reading level and able to write basic narratives or paragraphs. Week 1: Engaging The Senses (Sense bound writing, adjectives, & imagery) Week 2: Elements of Poetry (rhyme & meter) Week 3: Elements of Poetry (metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, hyperbole) Week 4: Traditional Forms (Haiku, Limerick, Concrete, & more) Week 5: Breaking The Rules (Prose & free verse) Week 6: Workshop & Editing Your Original Poems
