In this 4 week course, students will learn different elements of poetry through writing about nature. We will cover concepts such as rhyme, alliteration, personification, simile, and metaphor, as well as forms such as couplets, limerick, sense-based poetry, haiku, and free verse/prose. Each week, students will be introduced to examples of poetry, participate in a short writing exercise, and share their work with the class. The format is a combination of short lecture, exercise, and discussion. We will also cover concepts of earth stewardship, conservation, and ecological justice. Students will be given an optional homework assignment (a fun writing prompt) to complete on their own time between classes. They will have the option to share in class is desired. Students can be new to poetry, but should have basic reading and writing skills.
