Poetry Explorers: Reading and Writing a Variety of Poetry

This poetry course allows students to explore 8 different types of age appropriate poetry and then compose their own poem based on the model we have studied. Children need to understand that poetry is not something to memorize, but rather it is an enjoyable way to share their experiences and feelings with others. Students will understand how poetry is different from regular prose. Students will identify and compose the following types of poetry: acrostic, cinquan, sensory, limerick, haikus, shape/concrete, clerihew, and diamente poem.
Homework Offered
Students will have time to complete their work in class, but they may wish to edit and revise their poetry after class. However, it is not a requirement.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The poetry they compose will be used to provide an informal assessment.Grades Offered
Students will need paper and pencils or other writing utensils.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents are encouraged to review the types of poetry that will be studied during this course and to supervise students during class since they will be using writing utensils.
