Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
In this one-time class, learners will be learning about calendar dates, telling time, and data tables using an interactive pretend grocery store game!

At the beginning of class, the learners and teacher will have an introductory discussion about food and where it comes from. Some discussion questions may include: “Where does the food in your pantry come from?”, “How does food get to the grocery store or onto the shelves?”, “Who works in a grocery store?”. Visuals and pictures of different grocery stores will be used in class.

Next, learners will identify analog and digital clocks and learn about the hour and minutes on both an analog clock and a digital clock. The teacher will explain how to read “o’clock” and “half-past” the hour. The learners will apply this knowledge to determine the opening time and closing time of the grocery store, as well as different departments within the grocery store, such as the pharmacy, florist, and deli.

Then, the teacher and learners will discuss who works in a grocery store and their role. Learners will determine which employees are needed to operate the grocery store and then put those employees into a data table with the time of their shifts to create an employee schedule. Some additional extension tasks may include adding up the total number of hours each employee will work this week, sorting employees into “part-time” or “full-time,” and calculating total pay by adding by skip counting.

Finally, learners will follow one or more employees around the store as they check to make sure that all perishable groceries are “F.I.F.O.”, or “First In, First Out”. To do this, learners will have to look at the day, month, and year on each item to put the groceries in chronological order.

Throughout the entire class, many discussion questions will be asked in order to promote critical thinking, help the students to relate to the lesson, and introduce each topic within the lesson.

This class is best for any student ages 6 to 8, or 1st to 2nd grade. Students do not need to know the concepts or topics of the class beforehand. We will learn and review in class.

The class materials will be presented via Google Slides and screen shared on the teacher's screen only. Learners will need nothing outside of the Outschool Zoom classroom.
