Marine Science Explorers: Oceanography
Class experience
US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner Level
In this 4-week, self-paced class, learners will explore 4 different oceanography concepts through the creation and sharing of activity based learning projects. Each week learners will be provided with text and video video based content on the following ecosystems. Week 1: Ocean Zonation This week learners will explore the the 5 zones of the ocean depths by simulating surface light filtration. Week 2: Motion in the Ocean This week learners will explore the formation of wind driven ocean...

Week 1Lesson 1Ocean ZonesIn this lesson learners will explore the 5 zones of the ocean depths by simulating surface light filtration. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 2Lesson 2Motion in the OceanIn this lesson learners will explore the formation of wind-driven ocean currents with the creation of a model ocean basin. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 3Lesson 3Rise and FallIn this lesson learners will explore the mechanisms of tide formation in the ocean by creating a model. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.Week 4Lesson 4Frozen OceanIn this lesson learners will explore the importance and formation of sea ice with an experiment. Assessment of student achievement is conducted through project completion, short answer reflection, interactive learning lesson and quiz.
Upon completion of this class learners will be able to: -describe the mechanisms of tide formation. -describe the 5 ocean zones and how light is filters with in each zone. -describe the formation of ocean gyres and the effect of wind on surface currents. -describe the formation of sea ice. -differentiate between sea ice and glaciers. -describe importance physical oceanographic process on marine ecosystems.
I strive to create learner-centered, integrated lessons that relate content to students’ lives. I believe that my educational background in the field of marine science, professional teaching degree and extensive experiencing developing/delivering educational programs for all ages, will generate a class experience that fosters learners' appreciation for our oceans and environment. Please see my teacher profile page for more detailed information on my education and teaching experience.
