Marine Biology: Squid Dissection
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
During this class we will explore the what makes octopus and squid unique in the animal kingdom. We will learn about their habitats, behavior and anatomy with a live class dissection. Through our dissection we will explore the squid organ systems function and location. We will compare and contrast these structures to other organisms in the animal kingdom. While dissection is not required, students are welcome to dissect their own specimen during the class time. The recording to class...
Upon completion of this course students will be able to: -Identify internal and external structures and function of squid -Explain the adaptations for camouflage in squid. -Identify the characteristics unique to cephalopods
I have 6 years high school biology lab instruction which include animal dissection. Please see my profile for more detailed information on my expertise in marine science and biology.
We will be following Biology Corner's Squid Dissection https://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/squid_dissection.html
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
ADVISORY: Much of class time will be spend exploring the anatomy of the squid. Some learners my be sensitive to these images. For students to participate in the dissection they will need the following items: a thawed whole squid (*can be purchased a local grocer or bait shop), latex gloves, first aid scissors, sharp paring knife that can be sanitized, and a work space such as a kitchen counter or table. Safe food handling procedures must be followed when working with specimens. Please have all materials ready and available at the beginning of class. Safe knife handling procedures must be followed. Parental guidance is suggested. *Preserved specimens are not recommended.
