How do surfers catch waves? What types of waves make for a great surf ride? Answering these questions will guide our class activities and discussion. This class is part of a series on waves which includes Ocean Waves: Structure and Formation. Learners will engage with content though a combination of multi-media presentation, teacher demonstration and whole-class discussion. During class we will define hydro-static force, buoyancy, torque and gravity. Learners will be lead through teacher demonstrations of these forces and may choose to participate in their space at home. Together we will explore the worlds beaches through Google Earth to identify characteristics that create great surfable waves. Learners may participate in our discussion in a manner that suits their individual learning needs.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class students will be able to:
-identify types of wave breaks and how they apply to the sport of surfing.
-predict what beaches may produce good surfing conditions.
-explain the types of forces involved in catching and riding waves.
