Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
What are jellyfish and how do they compare to other organisms? How many different types of jellyfish are there? How do they create their sting and what should you do if you are stung? These questions will guide our exploration of these amazing creatures.

I strive to create a learner-centered classroom experience to deepen the relevance of the class content for each individual. This lesson will begin with an anticipatory set or "share session" to identify student's prior knowledge on these topics. New material is presented in a multi-media format. Learners create their own models of jellyfish structures from teacher modeling. Learners will categorize jellyfish based on their characteristics. Learners will demonstrate their understanding, in class, with interactive slides.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this lesson students will be able to:
-identify the structures of a nematocyst (or stinging cell).
-explain how the reproductive cycle of some jellyfish is different from other organisms.
-identify different species of jellyfish and where they can be found in nature.
-identify "urban legends" and facts about jellyfish stings and treatment.
