Understanding the science behind anxiety is kind of like revealing the man behind the curtain (for my Wizard of Oz fans). Students will learn that these feelings, while sometimes overwhelming, are not something to be feared. Instead, they will gain the understanding that they can take control of their own actions and emotions. The skills we will work on together are designed to empower your child to tackle these feelings when they arise. This is a crucial step in their journey towards managing their anxiety more effectively. I have a degree in child psychology, specializing in child and adolescent development, and I'm now attending Johns Hopkins University for my master's degree. I've designed this class to be fun! - We use YouTube videos, Blooket games to review skills and terminology, and lots of uplifting and thought-provoking conversation! SCHEDULE: Week of May 5: Which parts of the brain does anxiety affect? We'll cover the limbic system, brain stem, and frontal lobe; their functions and duties. Bonus: What actually is brain freeze? Week of May 12: Breath work - Box breathing, 5-finger breathing, and emergency brake breath. Week of May 19: Grounding exercises. 5-4-3-2-1 method, peripheral vision game, mindfulness. + cognition lab Week of May 26: Who are you? The theory of Theseus' boat + vision boards (practicing changing perspective and the way we see things) Week of June 2: The science behind dreams and nightmares - bedtime coping skills for relaxing and falling asleep faster. Week of June 9: Spongebob episode day! Season 2 episode 17 will be played in class. This episode perfectly depicts "task paralysis" which is what we will be covering this week with tips and tricks on how to embrace the struggle and overcome! + cognition lab Week of June 16: Test anxiety: How we learn (neural pathways) - study methods for relief and strategies to calm the jitters. Week of June 23: The power of mindful gratitude including PDF journal + cognition lab Week of June 30: Brain dissection class Week of July 7: Eat the frog method of tackling hard projects, brain dump and PDF worksheets. Both methods are intended to reduce stress and anxiety with schoolwork and responsibilities giving students a sense of control over their own schedules. Week of July 14: Self-care. What is it really, and how often do we need it? Week of July 21: Life audit skills + wheel of wellness - scanning for stressors and the "stress bucket visual" Week of July 28: Mind with a body? Or body with a mind? Controlling and rewiring the brain. Week of August 4: Circle of control + setting healthy boundaries Week of August 11: Stress exporting - cathartic ice, write and crumple, type and wipe. Week of August 18: Passive and active procrastination - Eisenhower matrix for organizing anxiety Week of August 25: Social anxiety strategies ... more to come *This class is educational in nature and should not be a substitute for talk therapy or used to treat or diagnose mental disorders*
