Class Experience

In this four week class, students will learn the foundations of Blender and low-poly box modeling through a series of instructional video lessons, exercises, and hands-on projects. In order to accommodate a variety of learning styles, the course also includes a 70+ page guide book with screenshots, tips, and tricks, that outlines the entire course. It can be used as an in-class guide, for a parent or guardian to follow along, and as a long-term reference book to refer back to long after class is over.

This class goes far beyond a simple demonstration on how to build two or three 3D models. It's structured to ensure that each student, upon completing the course, will leave with a strong sense of confidence and competency with the tools that we cover. Topics are first discussed and demonstrated through instructional video in a chapter based format. Then, concepts are solidified through a short series of exercises. Finally, each week students are challenged to complete an ongoing project that combines each of the concepts that we've worked on. For highly motivated students who want to learn more, there are up to four additional bonus projects available each week. Every single exercise, project, and bonus project, has a full solution video and downloadable project file to help students if they get stuck or need extra guidance.

I work hard to ensure a consistent and high quality on-demand classroom experience. This includes clear and concise lesson plans, course structure, high fidelity audio and video, and accessibility considerations. If you have any questions you'd like answered before signing up, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Class Outline:
Week One: The first week of class covers downloading and installing Blender, getting familiar with the interface and basic controls, transforming primitive 3D objects, and ends with a series of primitive modeling challenges.

Week Two: The second week of class covers both simple and advanced mesh editing, as well as modifiers. We finish this week by using these new tools to revisit and expand upon the first week's projects.

Week Three: The third week of class covers basic rendering, material application, and lighting concepts. We build on previous topics and exercises to see how we can improve them.

Week Four: The final week of class brings everything we've learned so far together in the form of a final project. Students have all week to catch up with the previous weeks' challenges if needed, and then follow along with my guided instruction on building, lighting, and rendering a full 3D scene. Students then have the option to create and share their own personal final projects, as well as follow along with two additional full-length bonus projects.

Notes:
This course does not cover sculpting, animation, UV editing, or video game engine importing. It does, however, build the skills necessary to approach these topics.

The course content, including access to the videos and updates, is yours indefinitely - even after class is over! While interaction within the classroom is limited to the listed course dates, you can still watch all of the videos and access all of the content posted for as long as needed.

A standard 3-button mouse is highly recommended but not required for class. If you are using an older computer or laptop, please refer to the blender system requirements page to ensure your computer is capable of running Blender. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/

Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.

I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
