Class Experience

Beginner Level
Welcome! I'm glad you're interested in learning more about 3D modeling and animation. It's a growing and highly employable industry that just so happens to be really fun too. Whether you're just diving into the world of 3D art, or you're looking to expand on what you've learned in one of my highly rated Blender flex-style courses here on Outschool, I'm looking forward to having you in class! Here's what you can expect:

Who can take this course? How long does it take?

This tutoring program is designed for both absolute beginners, and those who have just started their journey into 3D art. I meet you at whatever skill level you are at, and we work together to design a curriculum that helps you learn what you want to learn! The course lasts as long as you'd like. The course is built for long term students who want to continuously develop their skills on a regular basis. However, if you just wanted some help to nail down the basics and are satisfied after a few sessions - no problem!

What do we actually do during class?

This is not a lecture or theory based class. We won't just talk about 3D modeling and animation, we're actually going to do it! From day one we will open up Blender and get to work. I'll be there alongside you, guiding you with step by step instructions. You'll be able to see my screen, keypresses, and highly visible mouse movements to make sure you don't miss a thing. Each class is automatically recorded too - so you'll always be able to go back and double check a technique or take notes when it's most convenient for you.

How much work is expected of students? Are there grades or tests?

There are no grades or tests in any of my courses. At times I may suggest further study or optional homework. Simply put, you'll get from this course what you put into it. Learners who are motivated, ask questions, ask more questions, message me between classes for insights, and experiment on their own will excel.

Do we learn fundamentals of art, design, light, and color during this course?

This is primarily a technical tutoring program - that means that we focus heavily on mastery of the tools and software. It's my goal to accelerate your learning and proficiency with Blender so you can go out and make whatever type of art you'd like. However, we will always consider theories and application of proper design and aesthetics in our work.

What kind of 3D models and art will we make?

We will generally focus on low-poly 3D modeling and simple animations. Fully populated scenes with photorealistic rendering is currently out of the scope of this course.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to, or continue to develop their skills in, Blender 3D modeling and animation. Learning will be focused on low-poly and hard surface modeling, basic lighting, materials, and rendering, as well as animation. Hotkey familiarity and use will be emphasized, as it is key to efficient workflows.

I will share my Blender program window though Zoom screen share during the live class. I may sometimes ask permission for learners to share their Blender program window through Zoom to troubleshoot issues as a last resort. Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.

I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
