Class Experience

US Grade 5
The November 15 - December 15 section of this class is scheduled for a few extra days beyond 4 weeks to allow extra time to complete the class for those taking a holiday break in November.

As a reminder, this is a FLEX class which means there are NO Live meetings.

This class is Unit 1 of 4 units offered that will introduce 3 of a total of 12 comprehension skills. Each unit is independent of the other. Enroll in one unit, two units or all units. Also, the units do not need to be taken in order. In this unit, Unit 1, we will target the 3 comprehension skills: Understanding Words, Finding Information, and Identifying the Main Idea. In each section each week:
- Learners will have the option to watch a video where they can follow along as I read the text. The read along is geared more for students who have reading difficulties. Those who are fluent readers are encouraged to read the text on their own.
- Next, learners will watch a video of me teaching the comprehension strategies, then we will practice as we apply the strategies together with the given text.
- Next, learners will either view another video to help guide them in the completion of the "Practice Page", or they may opt to complete the "Practice Page" without video guidance first then use the video to check the accuracy of their answers.
- Next, learners will continue to practice the strategies learned by completing an "On Your Own" page. The student will either upload the completed "On Your Own" page to the classroom to be checked for accuracy by the teacher or upload a video of them completing the page verbally.
- Lastly, in each section/week of this unit, students will apply the strategies learned by participating in or completing an activity that will be shared with the other students in the classroom. Students will respond to and/or comment on each other’s shared posts and videos based on the content each week. More details will be given each week on how this interaction will take place (video upload, discussion, scavenger hunt, posting/answering questions to each other as it relates to weekly reading passage, photos, etc).
- In week four, students will complete a cumulative assessment to practice the strategies they learned. They will upload the assessment to the classroom for the teacher to check for accuracy. No grade is given for the assessment, but students will receive feedback on areas that need review.

Week 1/Section 1 (Understanding Words): We communicate with others by using words as our building blocks. This week we will learn that it is important to understand what words mean and will learn some ways to determine their meanings in context and be able to use those strategies to answer questions about texts.

Week 2/Section 2 (Finding Information): Students will scan passages to find keywords and learn how to use the keywords to find information. They will learn how to then use those keywords to find details as they carefully read and/or listen to passages being read. They will learn how to use the keywords to find clues to answer questions about passages.

Week 3/Section 3 (Identifying the Main Idea): Students are more likely to comprehend a text if they understand the main idea. This week in this section, students will practice this skill and learn and understand why it is important.

Week 4 (Cumulative Assessment on Sections 1-3): This week students will apply their knowledge of the strategies learned in the previous 3 weeks/sections to complete a cumulative assessment and submit it for teacher review and feedback.

Optional interaction will take place via written posts, attachments and videos in the classroom.

This FLEX class is part of my "Let's Target Comprehension" series. If you are interested in a LIVE format of a version of this class, live one-time TRIAL classes of this series are available for 2nd to 7th grades. Also, once a week live ongoing versions of these classes are might be available per request. These LIVE classes are not as indepth as the FLEX classes, but they do offer very small class sizes for individualized attention and immediate teacher feedback. You might want to consider a one time class or ongoing class to try this series or as a review for individual sections of the FLEX class units if your learner needs more practice with immediate feedback provided by the teacher. One-on-one tutoring sessions where we can cover this material and individualize our sessions for your learner are also available per request in either one-time, ongoing or multi-day (quarter/semester) formats per request.
