Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Each section of this class is offered once a week. However, feel free to enroll in as many sections as you'd like. The max number of learners is kept very small so that each learner has focused time for each game/task. This class is unique in that the weekly sessions are very short and your learner will be working to improve their own individual scores on some of the games/tasks each session. The games/tasks are repetitive, and we will move to more challenging exercises as your learner advances. So taking more sessions each week will usually help them advance faster. I've found shorter multiple sessions over the week can be more beneficial than one long session. However, I have seen improvement in learners that consistently do brain fitness training for short once a week sessions as well. Some brain fitness training is better than none at all.

In this class each week we will play games to help improve memory, discrimination, attention and/or focus. Some weeks we will do brain fitness exercises which will include: timing/rhythm exercises, balance exercises, slow movement exercises and/or eye/hand coordination exercises. Some sessions, learners will need a sturdy chair (that does Not rotate/swivel or, rock) or other sturdy furniture or equipment available to hold onto as needed for balance. Not much space is required for tasks we will do, but learners will need enough space to stretch arms out on either side and in front.

Check below for a list of games and exercises.

The games/exercises for each week will be chosen based on the readiness and/or progress of each individual learner. Each learner will complete two or more of the following games/exercises each session: balance exercise, color game, color word game, color/word combo game, shape game, shape/color combo game, direction game, color/direction combo game, timing/rhythm exercise, eye/hand coordination exercise, memory game, letter identification game, color/letter combo game. In this class the learners are NOT in competition with one another but are trying to improve each of their own individual scores. This has helped others improve their brain fitness which is very beneficial to a multitude of areas from school work to home tasks to sports and more.

If you don't see a time/day you would like to meet Monday-Thursday, please contact me to see if I have availability to add a section. Enroll in one or more sections the weeks of

Week of October 28

Learning Needs

Parental Guidance
I explain in class that a chair/sturdy piece of furniture is to be used to initiate balance and immediately to regain balance as needed. Some learners think losing balance is fun and they hop across the room or fall on purpose which can lead to an injury. PLEASE be sure your learner understands they are to use the chair or sturdy object for balance or stand on both feet immediately if they lose balance. If you don't think your learner will listen or follow these instructions from the teacher, please remain in the room to remind your learner to do the exercises only as instructed. Any learner not following these safety instructions may be moved to the waiting room for a few minutes if a parent or other adult is not supervising them. Balance exercises are only a small part of this class, but safety during these exercises is important. Your learner's enrollment in this class is your acknowledgement that you understand and agree to follow this parental guidance.
Pre-Requisites
The only pre-requisites required are mastery knowledge of shapes, colors, numbers, left/right and the ability to read the names of colors.

For more than three decades, I have successfully helped hundreds of children, teens and adults in public school, private school, homeschool and wellness center settings improve their listening, memory skills and more as well as in recent years specifically targeted brain fitness exercises. I have a M.S. degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences (speech-language pathology) and earned Master's level teaching certification. I am also an Interactive Metronome (IM) Certified Provider. IM is a computer based brain fitness training program. Although I cannot utilize IM on Outschool, I can use other brain fitness exercises I have utilized in my IM sessions that are challenging and work also to improve brain fitness. We can all benefit from brain fitness training. I have enjoyed observing accelerated progress in many of my students/clients/patients since adding brain fitness training to our sessions. I enjoy having a fun and structured class while giving positive and constructive feedback as I help learners improve their brain fitness skills and more.
