The Mini Prompt Express is a Creative Writing Workshop designed for teens. Born from years of creative writing workshop experience with youth and school students, the Mini Prompt Express combines the classic writing-and-feedback environment with a fun, low-pressure mini prompt environment where your teen can write exactly what comes to mind. A new mini prompt will be featured by the teacher each week, and may include imaginative, immersive prompts such as: -You invent a new ice cream flavor. What is it? -You suddenly morph into an animal at school. What type of animal is it, and what happens next? -You're on a flight that goes to the wrong destination. Where do you end up, and how do you handle it? -You get a scholarship to learn for one month from anywhere in the world. Where do you go and what do you do? -You come home to find a dragon in your backyard. Why is it there, and what happens next? -Invent a new way to get to Mars. -Tell me what happens on "opposite day" in your town. --- What Is a Typical Class Schedule? Writers will receive the topic at the beginning of class. The class schedule is usually as follows: First 10 minutes: Greetings and Introducing Mini Prompt of the Week; Skills Discussion Next 15 minutes: Writing about the Mini Prompt Final 15-20 minutes: Sharing Writings and Feedback Total: 45 minute class --- How Do Students Write in Class? Students are welcome to turn their chair another direction, mute their microphones, or turn their video off while writing. However, students should be near their computer, laptop, or phone to listen for when the bell is rung to wrap up writing and return for workshop feedback. Students will receive a 3-minute warning when time is almost up. They will then hear a final bell when it is time to finish writing and come back for the feedback portion. At this time, students should appear back in front of their laptop, computer, or phone to join into the workshop-style feedback part of the class. --- What Type of Instruction and Feedback Do Writers Receive? Writers will receive instructor feedback, peer feedback, and a discussion portion during each class where the instructor provides helpful tips and skill sets for creative writing. Resources and examples of writing in a similar skill set or genre may be provided, whether it is a recommendation to read a classic book or an excerpt from a famous poem.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of how to write creative fiction and nonfiction pieces.
Students will learn how to write short pieces with more confidence.
