This course will be twice a week for 4 weeks and students will be introduced to the study of Astronomy. We will use different software programs such as Celestia and Stellarium to view objects that are discussed. The class will be interactive with a small lecture, discussion, and relevant slides. Class 1: Ancient Astronomers Class 2: Naked Eye Observations Class 3: Fundamental Concepts (What is energy, matter, and gravity?) Class 4: Moon Class 5: Inner Solar System Class 6: Outer Solar System Class 7: Property of Stars Class 8: Death of Stars Homework will not be assigned but I will reach out if I feel your student needs extra work. I will have office hours for any questions or further clarification. The interactive class allows me to gauge the students’ understanding of the different concepts. Students should have a better understanding of our place in the universe and how it all works after the completion of the course. I do offer a space club that would be great for students to further discuss ideas and ask more questions.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a better perspective of the world around us. Students will be able to define energy, matter, and gravity. Students will be able to discuss our solar system in depth.
