What's included
12 live meetings
10 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. As optional homework, students will be encouraged to utilize the class handouts and continue using the remote telescopes between class sessions.Certificate of Completion
Students may request a Certificate of Completion from the instructor at the end of the course.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
This course explores fascinating topics in astronomy and astrophysics, while also capturing images of astronomical phenomena with professional observatory telescopes! During the course, students will work on building their own collection of Messier Catalog images. The Messier Catalogue is a famous catalogue among astronomers - it details many deep-sky objects such as galaxies, globular clusters and nebulae. It encompasses some of the best objects to see in the night sky with a telescope. Course content includes origins of our solar system and galaxy, the birth & death of stars, black body radiation and law of gravitation. Weekly course topics are listed below: Session 1: Origin of Our Solar System Session 2: Rocky Planets and Their Moons Session 3: Comets, Meteors, Asteroids, Oh My! Session 4: The Interstellar Medium Session 5: Newton's Law of Gravitation Session 6: How Do We Classify Stars? Session 7: Escape Velocity Session 8: Black Body Radiation: Stefan-Boltzmann Law, Wein Law Session 9: Black Body Radiation: Planck's Law Session 10: How to Build a Galaxy Session 11: Origins of the Big Bang Session 12: The Stuff The Universe Is Made Of This course is taught by Quantum Physics for Kids instructor Prof. Mark Baraket (M.S. Astrophysics), an experienced astronomy educator with extensive Slooh telescope experience and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists. We'll delve into a wide variety of astronomy topics in the course, exploring our solar system, galaxy and universe together as a class. NOTE: The suggested pre-requisite for this course is our beginning Astronomy course (listed below): Astronomy for Kids Using Actual Observatory Telescopes https://outschool.com/classes/astronomy-for-kids-using-actual-observatory-telescopes-stem-steam-space-fWuRXbbM?refuid=9fIT1FTd If your learner has prior experience with Slooh, telescopes, astronomy or astrophysics; or is in the older age range for this course, it is allowed to enroll in this Level 2 course directly. If you already purchased a Slooh account for the Astronomy for Kids with Observatory Telescopes course, then you can continue using your existing account without purchasing again. (The $30 Student Subscription is good for 1 year of access.) Recommended course materials consist of a $30/year Student Subscription to Slooh remote telescope services to use during the course. A link to sign-up at the discounted student rate ($30 for a year) will be emailed upon registration. If your learner is not interested in capturing their own telescope images, it is also possible to take this course to learn about astronomy and astrophysics, without using a Slooh telescope account. We automatically post the Class Recording after each class meeting. Each class session is a standalone topic, so if students miss a class, they can always rejoin the following week.
