Are you interested in astronomy and want to meet up with others to talk about it and learn about what's going on in the universe? This ongoing club will meet up once a week to talk space and learn about what's going on and why. Learners will have a chance to learn about upcoming phenomena that is visible from Earth and learn background information about why these phenomena are occurring. Each week we will meet up for 45 minutes to talk about what we've seen ourselves from our locations in the past week, share any astronomical information or facts we've found interesting, find out about current events in astronomy, and learn about an upcoming visible event that I will bring to the table. We will talk about the scientific background for each event and break down what is happening and why, and have a chance to ask questions about what's going on. This class is a lot of fun for all -- be prepared for lots of discussion! Our discussions will use visual elements as a guide in-class, and I will provide links to relevant articles and information as needed. Sample topics include: Visible Objects - Meteor showers - Planetary transits, opposition, and conjunctions - Lunar and solar eclipses - Comets - Milky way galaxy Astronomical Current Events - Supernovae - Exoplanets - Planets within our solar system - Discoveries on other planets, our moon, and other moons of our solar system - Aurora borealis - Black holes - Dark energy and dark matter Learners should have some basic understanding of our universe, galaxy, and solar system, the objects found within our universe, and some understanding of forces such as gravity and magnetism.
Learning Goals
Learners will discover new events in space, some of the underlying concepts behind why the occur, and what they are able to see from their vantage point on the Northern Hemisphere.
